In 1983, John van Eckeren starts the Circle Entertainment Video stores. 28 years later, CEO John is still dedicated to running the stores, together with his brother. John is devoted to film, and considers it a true art form. His interest in, and transition to, other visual art disciplines thus becomes obvious. At age 23 he buys his first work of art. From there on, he starts to collect art, spends time visiting exhibitions in Europe and abroad and attends a course in art history. Many collectors and artists become personal friends.
Four years ago John develops the idea of starting an art gallery in Hasselt. Opposite the Art Center of Hasselt and Z33, he refurbishes a former gallery to a spacious new exhibition room, fully taking advantage of the natural rooflight to illuminate the colourful paintings, drawings and/or sculptures on display.
Eastmen Gallery exhibits national and international contemporary art. The established artists are well represented, yet John also wants to give talented young artists a platform to help them break through. Across the province of Limburg, the Euroregion and, of course, in the town of Hasselt itself, John has expressed the ambition to make art accessible for everyone and improve the cultural level. In 1983 start John van Eckeren de vermaarde Entertainmentketen, Circle Videotheken. 28 jaar later is hij, samen met zijn broer, nog steeds een gepassioneerd zaakvoerder. John blijft verknocht aan film. Voor hem is film in de eerste plaats een echte kunstvorm. De stap naar andere beeldende kunsten is dan snel gemaakt. Op zijn 23ste koopt hij zijn eerste kunstwerk. Gebeten door de microbe, begint hij te verzamelen, bezoekt hij kunstbeurzen in binnen- en buitenland en volgt een cursus kunstgeschiedenis. Zijn vriendenkring breidt zich uit met tal van verzamelaars en kunstenaars.
Vier jaar geleden ontspruit het idee: een kunstgalerie starten in Hasselt. Aan de Zuivelmarkt in Hasselt - tegenover het kunstencentrum van Hasselt en Limburg Z33 - bouwt hij een voormalige kunstgalerij om tot de EASTMEN GALLERY.
EASTMEN GALLERY brengt nationale en internationale kunst. De gevestigde waarden binnen de kunstwereld komen ruim aan bod. EASTMEN GALLERY wil ook jonge kunstenaars laten groeien en een platform geven om bekendheid te verwerven. EASTMEN GALLERY heeft als doel om kunst, zowel Hasselt als in heel Limburg, toegankelijk te maken voor iedereen en naar een hoger niveau te tillen.
